Canon and shotgun
Shared by Kathryn Smith Date shared 29 May 2009 Projects Source Presentation

“With regard to the question of canonisation, we are obviously all aware that it's a complete construct. The writing of this history is really in its infancy. The minute you select out a few isolated examples you run the risk of creating a canon – maybe prematurely, maybe somewhat falsely. On the other hand, if everything is connected to everything, you run the risk that your exhibition will lose focus and become a shotgun effort.”

Kathryn Smith and Roger van Wyk reflect on researching and curating Dada South? Experimentation, Radicalism and Resistance (2009–2010) at a colloquium in Cape Town with invited practitioners held in anticipation of the show.
