A most hated object

"Seeing a passbook laid out and enlarged gives one a sense of how entirely the State controlled black people’s lives – from where they lived to how they moved, what employment they could seek. It was the absolute icon of state control, the most hated object. Without it on the street, a black person could be arrested immediately."
