In the early phases, A4 functioned from a studio at Atlantic House in Maitland, Cape Town, and at coffee shops around the city. Interested in learning from existing and established organisations in Cape Town, A4 responds to Portia Malatjie's curatorial project inviting artists to occupy the Association of Art's stoep (a stoep is a South African term for a veranda in front of a house). Over this period, A4 has the opportunity to engage with the AVA's institutional history.

A digital collage of hand drawn drawings and digital painting shows the AVA patio with a sign that reads ‘A4 Arts Foundation’ next to the AVA’s entrance, with artworks suspended from a tree branch along the length of the patio and a makeshift platform with a wood fire going on top of it.
