Texts by Lucienne Bestall and Sara de Beer with quotes from Moshekwa Langa in conversations with the artist towards this process.
We opened the project with a question: "How to make a book about Moshekwa Langa?" Over the course of three months, the Gallery became an installation and studio environment that included spaces for thinking, writing and planning. Colleagues and arts workers familiar with Moshekwa's practice were invited to talk at a table situated inside the exhibition, or online. We asked each to imagine what a book about Moshekwa might look like, using the idea of a 'book' as a heuristic tool for exploring three decades of Moshekwa’s artistic practice. Moshekwa visited from Amsterdam. We placed four different hangs of his artworks: some for quick looking and talking about, as well as installations for longer study. Visitors to the exhibition were invited to engage Moshekwa’s materials and methods. The process is still unfolding, with the making of a book about Moshekwa from these findings to be published in 2025.
