HOUSE OF GALA (front)
The 'House of GALA' T-shirt was produced in 2017, in recognition of the organisation's twentieth anniversary.
GALA was started in 1997 by Graeme Reid, and was housed at Historical Papers in the Cullen Library at the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2017, GALA celebrated its 20 years of queer archiving and activism with a retrospective exhibition and a Ball at Club Simply Blue (a now-defunct nightclub in Braamfontein, Johannesburg).
In addition, GALA organised a retrospective exhibition at the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre (2017) and an accompanying book (2018), both titled Out the Box: A Glimpse into 20 Years of Queer Archiving.
