Jo Ractliffe’s debut photobook marked a decisive turn in her photographic practice away from the conceptually inclined colour work of the 1990s and early 2000s, in favour of documentary. Ractliffe visited Luanda five years after the end of Angola’s decades-long civil war. Many of the book’s photographs were made in the sprawling Roque Santeiro market and in Boa Vista, one of Luanda’s oldest and largest neighbourhoods.
