The image of the Cape winelands as a series of bucolic white-walled redoubts framed by vineyards has been endlessly rehearsed in photobooks. Arthur Elliott, an American who parlayed his initial successes photographing Boer prisoners of war into recording historic landmarks, largely formalised this evergreen genre. Variously repurposed by publishers as illustrations, this book was the first time Elliott’s architectural photos, 162 in this book, received prime billing.
