Fashioned as an "antidote to conference ennui," JEDI workshops see participants working on unsolved and open research problems. Allowing for the spontaneous formation of teams, and encouraging team-building and bonding, the JEDI initiative recognises – to quote Bruce Bassett – that "long-term friendships and collaborations are great for humans and key for careers, especially for students who lack contact with top researchers."

The JEDI workshop hosted at A4 Arts Foundation was attended by 22 astronomers and postgraduate students from the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and the Square Kilometer Array.
